AERC/ADAC Fellowship Application

This program is a unique opportunity for students wanting to learn more about the Arctic and how business and government engage this region through the Centers’ respective initiatives: AERC Internship, ADAC fellowship, and ADAC-ARCTIC Fellowship Program. All Centers provide student opportunities in research, internships, and entry into the Homeland Security Enterprise as well as other federal, state, municipal and tribal organizations. The goal of this program is to support undergraduate and graduate education and professional development through integration of the Alaska’s Program for Arctic Research, Training, and Education; Workforce Development Initiative, the Arctic Summer Internship Program and merging them with successful concepts provided by AERC which includes United States Department of Labor Registered Apprenticeships. These programs coupled provide innovative and applied learning opportunities for students in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics research projects while also developing early-career faculty in mentoring young researchers and scientists for careers in the Homeland Security Enterprise.

A Systematic Framework Model to Assess the Feasibility and Environmental Impact of Wellhead Ignition Blowout

The primary objective of this research project is to develop a framework for DHS and other Federal Agencies to formulate a response for a well-head blowout, including the feasibility of an intentional well-head ignition. This will be accomplished by a droplet distribution combined with a combustion model. In addition, this project also includes a downwind dispersion model to study the impact of IWI on the indigenous and tribal communities in the region.

Expansion of a Drone Community of Practice in the Bering Strait Region in support of DHS Operations

A project to develop a sustainable drone community of practice (DCoP) in the Bering Strait region. Perform community assessments using USA-made drones to supply situational awareness before, during, and after a disaster response to the HSE. Transition the training program to regional HSE partners for DCoP longevity and expansion of crucial situational awareness for response operations in remote western Alaska.

Adapting, Assessing, and Mitigating Risks to a Complex Future in the Arctic - A Multi-Stakeholder Framework

Field research and interactive workshops in Nome and Anchorage to collect data on challenges, preferences, resources, constraints, and vulnerabilities. Analysis, visualization, and mapping of intersections between issue areas, causal structures, spatial and temporal vulnerabilities, and sources of resilience. Decision- and game-theoretic modeling offering actionable insights to assist decision making. Development of tabletop exercises and case studies.

Reliable Arctic Power & Intelligent Energy Resilience

RAPIER: Addresses gaps in the current state of renewable and green energy and applicability to the harsh Arctic environment. There are multiple renewable energy sources with different levels of maturity that will be evaluated for operation in the Arctic region and specific case-study locales. [RAPS] Reviews local resources in remote Arctic areas and maps appropriate renewable technology to available resources. [IRON] Provides methodological framework and computational tools to identify which technologies are applicable in that environment and how they can operate optimally with regards to set mission objectives and metrics.

Investing in Future HSE Professionals: ADAC-ARCTIC Fellows Program

The program engages student interns with DHS COE projects providing them with technical and professional development experiences during the academic year, and a 10-week internship during the summer. The fellowship is open to undergraduate, graduate, and advanced graduate students. The program specifically engages with Minority-Serving (MSI) and Significant Minority Enrollment (SME) and Title III waiver institutions. Selected Fellows meet GPA requirements, are US Citizens enrolled in STEM, and commit to employment with HSE or related agencies after graduation.

Arctic Foundations: Building the Workforce of the Future

The project will build industry awareness to attract, develop, and retain a workforce that meets or exceeds the current and future needs of the opening of the Arctic. Integrate with education partners to develop a USDOL-recognized Registered Apprenticeship program, provide pathways for students and professionals to gain non-traditional education experience in Alaska and Arctic conditions on a variety of projects and courses related to challenges faced by DHS.

Indigenous Elder, Knowledge Keeper, and Leader- in Residence Program

The project draws on the knowledge and experience of Arctic Indigenous peoples by building connections between Elders, Knowledge Keepers, and Leaders and DHS HSE and ADAC-ARCTIC. This program will expand and strengthen stakeholders’ knowledge of Indigenous community-specific teachings and cultural practices. Specifically, the project will provide engaged conversations on Indigenous traditions, languages, language revitalization, and issues impacting Indigenous health/wellbeing such as intergenerational trauma, colonization and colonialism, and their impacts upon Alaska Native communities.
